Delta Earth Week: Watershed Creek Fish Release
Sunday, April 19, 2009 marks the seventh year that local salmon stocks will be boosted by the release of 25,000 chum fry into Watershed Creek.
The public is invited to assist with the fish release between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. Previous years have attracted many families with young children, who have enjoyed pouring buckets of tiny fish into the creek.
Two and a half years ago, local residents and those who frequent Watershed Park were very excited to see the first significant return of mature chum salmon to Watershed Creek in many years. These fish entered the creek in the spring of 2002. The fall 2007 and 2008 returns were much less successful with few reports of returning fish, similar to surrounding areas - life is tough for salmon.
This year, the fish release will kick off Earth Week in Delta and will include crafts, activities and interactive presentations by several environmental organizations. You can find out about environmental initiatives in Delta and learn how your family can reduce its 'footprint' and enhance our environment, not just at Watershed Park but wherever you go.
Watershed Park, a 153 hectare natural area, can be entered from parking areas on Kittson Parkway, Pinewood Drive and Highway 10.
Attendees to this event on April 19, 2009 can follow the posted fish signs from the parking lots to the fish release area.
Participants in the fish release are advised to wear sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing.

Pitch-In Week
PITCH-IN CANADA Week is a annual national community clean-up and beautification program that is part of the year-round PITCH-IN CANADA program. PITCH-IN CANADA Week, which began in 1967, now involves over 3 million Canadians annually and has become the largest environmental action program in Canada.
Operation: Clean Sweep is a massive voluntary campaign encouraging residents to clean-up litter from city streets, rural areas, trails, parks, rivers and streams, wilderness areas and neighbourhoods. This year, the campaign coincides with Delta's Earth Week activities.
As a joint effort between the Corporation of Delta and PITCH-IN CANADA, residents, community groups and businesses are encouraged to clean and tidy up their own properties and adjacent public property during the campaign week.
To get involved in this community-wide campaign, form a group, pick an area and register online at
www.pitch-in.ca.
Please note that you are still able to register after the March 15th deadline.
Delta will provide registered groups with suggestions for areas in need of clean-up, supply garbage bags, and if needed, coordinate the pick-up of collected litter.
For more information, contact the Engineering Department at (604) 946-3260 or email engineering@corp.delta.bc.ca

Doghouse are holding their 7th Ceildh/Barn Dance on Saturday 25 April from 7.30-11pm at Ladner Community Centre, 51st Street, Ladner.
This event will be raising money towards the Delta Hospice Building Fund which we consider a tremendously important project for Delta and we hope that you will come to support this worthy cause.
Tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for 10 years and younger, and include snacks and fantastic door prizes.
We have Bob Rentz, a very experienced Vancouver caller, to help you try out the dances, the music starts and everyone laughs the whole evening!
We will also be holding a 50/50 draw to help with our charity donation.
There is a pay bar with wine, beer and soft drinks.
This is a lovely family event but we prefer not to have tinies as they might get hurt during the dancing if they run wild! Adults running wild is fine!
Tickets can only be obtained in advance, not at the door, so please contact me on 604-940-0844 or pedwards7@cs.com so that we can organise your table.
If you have a group of 10 we can reserve your table in advance. Otherwise it is a great way to make new friends for the evening!
Look forward to seeing you! |
