Tuesday 9 February 2010 Light the Spirit of Delta

LIGHT THE SPIRIT OF DELTA...a day of celebration as the Olympic Torch Relay comes to Delta.
Tuesday, February 9th will be a big day for Delta. The Olympic Torch Relay will visit all three communities and the Tsawwassen First Nation.
The day starts soon after 8am in North Delta where the Torch Relay will begin its Delta ‘legs.’ Entertainers (school bands, choirs, dancers, etc.) along the route will keep everyone warm and energized. The Torch will leave Delta by 9:30am and head to Surrey and New Westminster. Later that morning, there will be two theatrical performances in North Delta. Look for the sites and times of these performances in January. Along the route, members of Delta’s Spirit of BC Committee will be handing out gloves so the Torchbearers are greeted with a sea of red and white hands as they pass by.
The Torch comes back to Delta with a start in Tsawwassen in the early afternoon. Again, entertainment will be provided by local musicians to keep onlookers engaged and hot chocolate will keep them warm until the Torchbearers run by. A third theatrical performance will take place in South Delta. The Torch then makes its way through Ladner to Delta Municipal hall, where it should arrive at about 4 pm. Delta is organizing a celebration at Municipal Hall with local entertainers, a fourth theatrical presentation and lots of fun for everyone. At 7pm, Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta will host women’s Olympic hockey teams from Finland and Slovakia in an exhibition Game. Tickets are $15 each and available at Sungod Recreation Centre (604.952.3075), South Delta Recreation Centre (604.952.3020) and Ladner Leisure Centre (604.946.3310).
For more information, please contact Julie Halfnights at 604.952.3540 or at jhalfnights@corp.delta.bc.ca.

Tuesday 26 January 2010 Protect Burns Bog - Attend the Public Hearing!

Where? Delta Municipal Hall - 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC V4K 3E2

When? Tuesday, January 26 at 7PM

Why? To discuss the rezoning of 8348 River Way and 7480 80th Street from Environmentally Sensitive Area to Industrial to accomodate the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Show your support for preserving Burns Bog and protecting the endangered Southern red-backed vole found in this area.

Delta Council's failure to uphold bylaws has silently given the Provincial government the impunity to ignore Delta's bylaws, allowing for this rezoning.

Don't let them get away with it.

Your presence shows Council you are watching. Your presence tells Council they cannot hide from public scrutiney. Wear green in solidarity with the Society's campaign.

If you can not attend, write a letter to Delta Council or email mailto:mayor-council@corp.delta.bc.ca opposition to Bylaws 6827 and 6828. State these are publicly owned, environmentally sensitive Burns Bog lands that should be added to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area - NOT REZONED INDUSTRIAL! Be sure to copy in the Society (communications@burnsbog.org).

For a template letter you can simply sign your name to click here.

Over a hundred people gathered last Saturday to discuss the social, environmental and economic impacts of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) at a townhall meeting in Delta. People voiced their frustration with the lack of leadership by Delta Council grabbing widespread media attention thanks to all who attended and forwarded the message about this important meeting.

Loss of farmland, loss of bogland and alternatives to the road were discussed throughout the course of the afternoon, but it all boiled down to two points: The road is not needed and it can still be stopped.

We need your continued support. Help stop the SFPR by coming to this meeting.
For more information check out the Bylaws by clicking here.

Let's make a difference together.

Light the Way is a Christmas tradition at Delta Hospital.

Taking place at Mountain View Manor, we celebrate the season with crafts, storytelling, hayrides and of course - Santa arriving!

Join us for an evening jam-packed with kids and families in Residential Care.

Watch Santa arrive by a flashing fire truck and go for a sing-a-long hayride around the hospital.

Sit on Santa's lap and let him know what your Christmas wishes are!

In 2008, the craft table was a big hit, as was the hayride through the brightly lit hospital grounds.

The entertainment was top-notched, from the glowing faces of the children’s choir to the crooning of George Ellenton's ‘Frank Sinatra’ and local entertainer Peter Chipman.

The many residents clapped and sang along, outlasting the kids and were the last to leave this amazing Christmas celebration.
